A brief discussion on the knowledge related to Petrol Car turbocharging

2024 07/09

A Petrol Car turbocharger is actually an air compressor. It uses the exhaust gas flow discharged by the engine as power to drive the turbine in the Petrol Car turbocharger. The turbine drives the coaxial impeller, which compresses the fresh air sent by the air filter pipe and then sends it into the cylinder.

The characteristic of Petrol Car turbocharging is that it makes good use of the kinetic energy of exhaust gas discharge. Relatively speaking, it will not increase the load of the engine, so it is more efficient. Its disadvantage is what we often call "hysteresis", but today's Petrol Car turbocharged engine uses smaller and lighter turbine blades and other methods to enable the engine to output peak torque at a lower speed (about 1200rpm), and the feeling of "hysteresis" is already very small.
The mechanical supercharger is usually connected to the pulley of the engine crankshaft by a belt, and the rotation of the crankshaft is used to drive the blades inside the mechanical supercharger to rotate. The rotating blades send the generated pressurized air into the intake manifold.
The biggest feature of mechanical supercharging is "full-time intervention", which enables it to obtain supercharging effect at low engine speed, and the acceleration feeling is relatively linear without hysteresis. The disadvantage is that it relies on the drive of the engine crankshaft, so it will lose some engine power, especially at high engine speed, the loss is more obvious.
In fact, the Great Wall Car turbocharger system and the mechanical supercharger system can complement each other's advantages, which is also the reason why some engines use dual supercharging. The mechanical supercharger works at low and medium engine speeds, and in the medium and high speed range, it mainly relies on the Great Wall Car turbocharger, which not only solves the problem of turbo hysteresis, but also does not lose too much engine power. However, since the current Great Wall Car turbocharged engine has solved the problem of turbo hysteresis very well, it is sufficient to use a Great Wall Car turbocharger alone.
